What are psychoeducational assessments?
A psycho-educational assessment aims to provide information to parents and educators about a student's cognitive, academic, social-emotional, behavioural, and/or adaptive functioning strengths and weaknesses. Results from a psycho-educational assessment can be helpful in the following ways:
(1) determining whether the student meets the criteria for a specific school designation or DSM-5-TR diagnosis (e.g., gifted, specific learning disorder, intellectual disability, ADHD, anxiety disorder) and qualifies for special education services;
(2) identifying other reasons that may cause poor performance in school, such as difficulty with attention or memory or social and emotional concerns;
(3) developing strategies based on the student's individual needs to be implemented at school and home.
Psychology Services
We offer professional, comprehensive psychoeducational assessments, consultation, and counselling services to help children and youth succeed better at school and in life. Psychoeducational assessments are provided to children ages eight to sixteen. Counselling services are provided to youth ages thirteen to twenty-one. We also offer consultative services to help you understand your child's previous psychological assessments and Individual Education Plan (IEP) better. In the future, we hope to provide psychoeducational groups on topics you are interested in, such as understanding IEPs, the special education process in schools, mental health issues and more.
Please note that the most significant variable in counselling is the professional relationship or connection between the client and the psychologist. It is the connection that matters the most for successful therapy to occur. We also use Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which you will learn all about during our counselling sessions.
